Discouraged Ones

### Editorial Review of "Discouraged Ones" "Discouraged Ones," the third album by Swedish metal band Katatonia, marks a significant departure from their earlier death metal roots, steering into a melancholic sound characterized by clean vocals, brooding atmospheres, and introspective lyrics. Fans of the genre will likely find this evolution either compelling or perplexing, as the album balances haunting melodies with heavy emotional themes reminiscent of classic gothic rock bands like The Cure. Jonas Renske, who not only sings but also plays drums and keyboards, injects the record with a low, introspective vocal style influenced by various European pop and rock musicians. This album acts as a bridge, paving the way toward the more refined sound that Katatonia would perfect in later releases. Early tracks like "I Break" reveal a stronger rock orientation, whereas the haunting climax of the closer "Scarlett Heavens" showcases the band’s transition into a more atmospheric territory. While critics note that much of the material adheres to traditional 4/4 structures with simple chord progressions, it is the moody atmospherics that distinguish "Discouraged Ones" from other works. Listeners may initially find the songs sonically similar, but upon deeper exploration, the nuanced differences and lyrics resonate strongly, revealing the album's artistic depth. Songs like "Saw You Drown" offer chilling narratives, enhancing the overall emotional weight of the music. Despite being a less technically complex album, "Discouraged Ones" stands out for its rich atmosphere and compelling songwriting. It’s hailed as a pivotal moment in Katatonia's discography and is regarded as an essential listen for fans of the doom metal genre who appreciate the beauty found in melancholy. ### Pros and Cons **
