Literature & Fiction Editorial Review
Twisted Never After by Emily McIntire is a retelling of Aladdin and Jasmine's story. It follows the love story of Yasmin and Julian where the villain gets the girl. The family business idea and backstory of both the characters add to the depth of the story. Yasmin is a levelheaded and self-aware character, and Julian is a serial killer due to childhood trauma. The story execution is simple yet effective, and the childhood Emily wrote for Julian is heartbreaking. There are nods to Disney's Aladdin throughout the book, which adds to the nostalgia, and the uses for the genie, the lamp, and even Raja, were genius. The book overall is a slow burn, but the villain's happiness made it worth it.
