- Uzun yıllar Mısır’da yaşayan ve bu ülkenin tarih, kültür ve mitolojisine meraklı Agâh Paşa, topladığı kitaplar, antikalar ve gizemli objelerle dolu İstanbul’daki yalısında seçkin misafirlerini ağırlamaktadır. İstibdat döneminin şiddetine rağmen bir araya gelen misafirler arasında, hafiye olduğu söylenen ve pek sevilmeyen fakat sohbeti için katlanılan Ahmet Nebil Bey de vardır. Agâh Paşa’nın koleksiyonundaki en sevdiği parça, misafirlerce tekinsiz görülen kama biçimindeki timsah tanrı Sobek heykelciğidir. Herkesin aksine bu heykelciği çirkin bularak denize atılmasını öneren Ahmet Nebil Bey, bir müddet sonra yalıdaki bir odada ensesine Sobek saplanmış halde ölü bulunur. “Timsahlı İğne Cinayeti” olarak kayıtlara geçen bu vakayı, Savcı İrfan Efendi soruşturmaya başlar. Ne var ki günlerce gazeteleri süsleyen ve çözümü için en ufak bir ipucu bile bulunamayan bu esrarengiz cinayet sarayı da tedirgin eder. Böylece kapanmak üzere olan dosyayı, ruh çağırma, hipnoz ve fal bakma gibi yetenekleri olan İhsan Avni Bey, padişahın yüksek müsaadeleriyle tek başına devralır. Fakat bir tarafta aranan somut kanıtlar, mantıksal çıkarımlar, olay yeri ve görgü tanıkları, diğer tarafta duvarda beliren hiyeroglifler, kendiliğinden açılan fal kâğıtları gibi doğaüstü olaylarla bu esrarengiz cinayeti çözmek hiç de kolay olmayacaktır. Selim Nüzhet Gerçek’in Ahmet Kâmil müstearıyla 1922’de İleri gazetesinde tefrika edilen mistik polisiye romanı Meçhul Kuvvetlere Kurban, yazarın ilk kez yayımlanan “Habeşistan Hançeri” adlı hikâyesiyle birlikte okurla buluşuyor.
