- A dimension on a drawing is two things at once: a size, and a statement of how much that size may vary from part to part. A reader who takes only the first has half of it.Every tolerance can be turned into two numbers, the largest and the smallest the feature may be. An ordinary untoleranced size takes the applicable general tolerance when the drawing's notes or standard make that general tolerance applicable to it.
